Reconstructing a Jewel of Islamic Art (Ciltli)

A magnificent example of Islamic art, in one of the holiest sites in the Muslim world, the Minbar of Saladin was the elevated pulpit and stairway installed in the al-Aqsa mosque after the Crusaders were expelled from Jerusalem in 1187. Intricately built from 16,000 pieces of carved wood, ivory, and ebony, it stood for nearly 800 years as a pinnacle of Islamic craftsmanship. But in August 1969 a misguided extremist burned the minbar to ash, nearly touching off a war in the Middle East. Illustrated with 145 photos and drawings in color and 68 in black and white, this companion volume to the BBC documentary Stairway to Heaven chronicles the heroic efforts to rebuild the minbar, requiring craftsmen to relearn sacred geometries and skills all but lost to antiquit.
